How it's calculated
The calculator estimates your ovulation day using the same luteal-phase method as the ovulation calculator (your cycle length minus 14 days from your LMP), then marks the five days before ovulation plus ovulation day itself as your fertile window. This six-day range reflects sperm survival time (sperm can live in the reproductive tract for up to 5 days) and the roughly 24-hour lifespan of the egg after release. It's a calendar-based estimate, not a confirmed measurement of your actual fertile days.
Frequently asked questions
Because sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to 5 days waiting for an egg, and the egg itself is viable for about 24 hours after ovulation. That combined window, the days before ovulation plus ovulation day, is when intercourse is most likely to result in conception, not just the single day ovulation happens.
Ovulation day is the single day the egg is released. The fertile window is the broader six-day range, including the days leading up to ovulation, when conception is possible because sperm can already be present and waiting when the egg is released.
No, the days closest to and including ovulation day carry the highest chance. The earliest days of the window (5-4 days before ovulation) have a lower but still real chance, since it depends on sperm surviving until the egg is released.
Yes. The fertile window is calculated from your entered cycle length, so a longer or shorter cycle shifts both your estimated ovulation day and the window around it. If your cycles vary significantly, recalculate each cycle using your most recent length rather than relying on one fixed estimate.
Your fertile days typically begin several days after your period starts, not necessarily after it ends, and the exact timing depends on your cycle length. For an average 28 day cycle, the fertile window falls around days 9 to 14, counting from the first day of your period. If your period lasts 5 days, that means your fertile window can begin as little as 4 days after your period ends. Shorter cycles push this earlier, sometimes overlapping with the tail end of your period itself. Use the fertile window calculator with your own average cycle length for a personalized estimate rather than relying on the 28 day average.
The best time to try to conceive after your period is during your fertile window, the two to three days before ovulation and ovulation day itself, not simply a fixed number of days after your period ends. For a typical 28 day cycle, this falls around days 12 to 14 from the start of your period. Shorter cycles move this window earlier, sometimes to within a week of your period ending, while longer cycles push it later. Calculate your specific dates with the fertile window calculator using your own cycle length rather than assuming the 28 day average applies to you.
Your most fertile days are the two to three days immediately before ovulation and ovulation day itself, a specific point in your cycle, not a fixed number of days after your period. In an average 28 day cycle, that falls around days 12 to 14 counting from the first day of your period. If your cycle is shorter than 28 days, these days arrive sooner, sometimes not long after your period ends. Enter your own cycle length into the fertile window calculator to see your exact estimated dates instead of relying on a general average.
